Hutchison concedes Texas GOP primary

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has conceded the Texas Republican gubernatorial primary to Gov. Rick Perry.

Hutchison told supporters in Dallas on Tuesday night that she called Perry once she believed the election results were clear. She said that “we have fought valiantly for our principles, but we did not win.”

Perry, Hutchison and GOP activist Debra Medina were vying for the Republican nomination in a hard-hitting primary that largely overshadowed the Democratic race and highlighted the anti-Washington sentiment among midterm voters.

With a third of precincts reporting, Perry was ahead with 52 percent of the vote to Hutchison’s 31 percent. Medina had 17 percent. Hutchison might have been in a runoff with Perry had his support dropped to less than 50 percent.

The winner of the GOP race will face former Houston Mayor Bill White, who defeated six other candidates on the Democratic side to become his party’s nominee.

Editorial comment

March 2nd, 2010 by Bobby Palmer

A blogger asked for my thoughts about the results so far……

Do Hall and Perry’s leads mean the anti-incumbent feeling represented by the Tea Party has been over-rated? I never thought Perry and Hall were good targets for Tea Party sharp shooting. Both are well to the right.

The anti-incumbent sentiment will be felt most in close races with a liberal incumbent, even if the alleged Tea Party tsunami turns out to be only a wave in the kiddie pool.

Perry still leading

March 2nd, 2010 by Bobby Palmer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry took an early lead over Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and a third candidate drawing support from the state’s tea party movement in Tuesday’s primary.

Perry, Hutchison and GOP activist Debra Medina were vying for the Republican nomination in a hard-hitting primary that largely overshadowed the Democratic race and highlighted the anti-Washington sentiment among midterm voters. With a handful of precincts reporting and nearly 650,000 GOP votes counted, Perry was ahead with 52.5 percent of the vote to Hutchison’s 31 percent. Medina had 17 percent.

White wins nomination

March 2nd, 2010 by Bobby Palmer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former Houston Mayor Bill White defeated six other candidates Tuesday to become the Democratic nominee for Texas governor, giving the party its best hope in years at winning the chief executive post.

White, a well-funded businessman who made a name for himself with his city’s response to the Hurricane Katrina evacuation, will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election.
